Our beginnings, team & design process

How Gypsy Cabins started...

Gypsy Cabins had humble beginnings when it started with James Lapham and his partner Samantha in February of 2010. James wanted to give his eldest son a place to stay on the property when he would visit – so James built a small cabin on rails so it could be moved around to suit their needs.

Once it materialised, locals passing by couldn’t help but to call in and get a closer look. They began asking James if he could build them a cabin. One wanted an artists studio, one needed extra bedrooms and another wanted a hair salon. Before long, with so many orders, Samantha suggested going into business building these cabins.

James has always loved using recycled materials in the construction, making them much more affordable while still possessing beauty and comfort. Gypsy Cabins have grown to be a competitive alternative to other forms of relocatable accommodation.

Why are Gypsy Cabins & the tiny home movement so popular?

Gypsy Cabins are all about recycling and facilitating a bespoke asset. They will customise to your lifestyle and needs whilst creating something that you can have for generations being strong, durable and built to current standards.

In today’s economy, many people find it difficult to buy their first home. The process is both time consuming and costly. Gypsy Cabins are designed to be an alternative that can cater to your budget. We build cabins that can serve as a living alternative while you build, or even as a ‘granny flat’ style extension to your existing house. These cabins have also been used as offices, teenager or parent retreats, weekenders on rural blocks and additional facilities in educational settings.

James is from a bricklaying and house construction background and as such is only satisfied if everything he puts his time into is made to last. Our cabins are built like a miniature house which is engineered to withstand multiple moves (which a cabin may experience in its lifetime). These cabins are built to be low maintenance, so you have more time for the important things in life.

After almost 10 years we have put down some roots so y’all can visit us where cabins are available for viewing on any day. Give us a call to make a booking, we are located at 730 Bellthrope Range Road, Stanmore, QLD – just under 2 hours north of Brisbane. We have big plans to one day build fast enough to have a display village, please do drop by!
